Vance Calls for Stronger U.S.-India Ties in Defense and Energy to Counter Global Challenges

Senator J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) urged the United States to strengthen its strategic partnership with India, particularly in defense and clean energy, during a speech at the U.S.-India Strategic Partnership Forum. He described the alliance as essential for countering shared threats and fostering economic resilience in an increasingly unstable geopolitical landscape.

Vance emphasized the need for closer military cooperation, including joint technology development and expanded defense trade, to counterbalance China’s growing influence in the Indo-Pacific. "A strong U.S.-India defense partnership isn’t just beneficial—it’s necessary for maintaining a free and open region," he said. His comments come as the Pentagon explores faster approval for advanced weapon sales to India, including drones and missile systems.

On energy, Vance proposed collaborative efforts in nuclear, solar, and hydrogen technologies to reduce dependence on hostile supply chains. "Energy security is national security," he stated, advocating for streamlined regulations to accelerate joint projects. India, which has been seeking U.S. investment in its renewable energy sector, could see new agreements announced during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Washington.

The senator’s remarks reflect broader bipartisan support for India as a key ally, with lawmakers on both sides pushing for stronger economic and military ties. Analysts suggest Vance’s focus on energy and defense signals a pragmatic approach to countering China while boosting American and Indian industries.

The White House has not yet responded to Vance’s proposals, but officials have previously highlighted India’s role in U.S. strategy for the Indo-Pacific. With the Quad summit approaching later this year, experts anticipate further steps to solidify the partnership.
