Authorities Direct Railways to Install Durable Fencing to Curb Trespassing

In a major push to improve railway safety, government authorities have ordered the Indian Railways to install strong, long-lasting fencing along high-risk sections of train tracks to prevent trespassing. The decision follows a worrying increase in accidents caused by pedestrians illegally crossing railway lines, leading to unnecessary deaths and frequent service disruptions.  

Railway officials have been tasked with identifying accident-prone areas—particularly near crowded neighborhoods, busy stations, and unauthorized crossings—where people often cut across tracks. The new barriers will be made of tough materials like reinforced steel or concrete to resist damage and deter trespassers. A senior railway spokesperson emphasized that the fencing is a critical step toward reducing risks, stating, "Too many lives are lost because people take dangerous shortcuts. These barriers will help enforce safety while minimizing disruptions."  

In addition to physical fencing, the Railways will boost surveillance with cameras and increased patrols in high-risk zones. Public awareness drives will also be expanded to warn communities about the dangers of walking on or near tracks.  

Transport safety experts have praised the move, calling it a necessary measure to prevent avoidable tragedies. While fencing alone may not stop all incidents, it is expected to significantly reduce accidents when combined with monitoring and public education.  

The project will be rolled out in stages, with the most dangerous sections prioritized for immediate action. Officials aim to complete the first phase within six months as part of broader efforts to modernize rail infrastructure and protect passengers and pedestrians alike.
