Murshidabad violence: BJP alleges Hindu families were specifically targeted and closely monitored

Fresh Communal Clashes in Murshidabad Spark Political Row as BJP Alleges Targeted Violence Against Hindus

Communal tensions erupted once again in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district late Monday night, leaving a trail of damaged homes, burnt shops, and at least a dozen injured. While authorities claim the situation is now under control, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has leveled serious allegations, asserting that Hindu families were deliberately singled out and monitored before the violence broke out.

Eyewitnesses describe chaotic scenes in Beldanga, where an initial altercation between two groups quickly spiraled into stone-pelting and arson. Police reinforcements were rushed to the area, imposing restrictions to prevent further escalation. However, a BJP fact-finding team that visited the site has painted a more sinister picture, alleging premeditated attacks on Hindu households.

"The pattern is alarming—specific families were identified and targeted," said BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar. "This wasn’t spontaneous mob violence but a calculated assault, and the administration’s inaction raises serious questions." The party has demanded a high-level probe, accusing local authorities of failing to act on prior intelligence.

The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) has dismissed the allegations as baseless and politically charged. Senior leader Firhad Hakim countered, "The BJP thrives on division. West Bengal has always been a land of communal harmony, and we will not allow anyone to disrupt it for electoral gains." The state government has announced compensation for affected families and vowed strict action against perpetrators.

On the ground, fear lingers among residents. A Hindu shopkeeper, too afraid to be named, recounted, "They came at night, shouting and breaking everything. We’ve lived here for years—why us?" Meanwhile, Muslim community leaders appealed for calm, with one elder stating, "This violence benefits no one. We must reject those trying to tear our shared history apart."

As police file cases against unnamed suspects, the BJP has sought intervention from the National Human Rights Commission. Civil society groups are urging dialogue to ease tensions, but with political rhetoric intensifying, Murshidabad’s path to peace remains uncertain.
