Opposition parties voice disapproval over Dhankhar’s remarks about the Supreme Court
Opposition Parties Condemn Dhankhar’s Remarks on Supreme Court, Demand Respect for Judiciary
Opposition leaders across party lines have strongly criticized Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar for his recent comments questioning the Supreme Court’s authority, calling his remarks "an affront to judicial independence."
Dhankhar, while speaking at a public event on Monday, reiterated his stance that Parliament’s legislative power is "supreme" and cannot be challenged by the judiciary. His comments have reignited the ongoing debate over the separation of powers between the legislature and the judiciary.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge accused Dhankhar of undermining constitutional principles. "The Supreme Court is the guardian of the Constitution. Questioning its authority erodes the checks and balances essential to democracy," Kharge said.
Trinamool Congress leader Mahua Moitra echoed similar concerns, stating, "The Vice President’s repeated jibes at the judiciary are dangerous. We must respect judicial autonomy, not weaken it for political convenience."
CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury warned against any attempt to diminish the judiciary’s role. "The Constitution clearly defines the separation of powers. Undermining the judiciary sets a dangerous precedent," he said.
The BJP, however, defended Dhankhar’s remarks, with Union Minister Anurag Thakur stating, "The Vice President was merely emphasizing parliamentary sovereignty as enshrined in the Constitution."
Legal experts have also weighed in, with senior advocate Prashant Bhushan cautioning against any rhetoric that could pressure the judiciary. "Judicial independence is non-negotiable in a democracy," he said.
As tensions escalate, opposition parties are planning to raise the issue in Parliament, demanding a clarification from the government on its stance regarding judicial authority.
