BJP Members in PAC Raise Alarm Over Aadhaar Misuse, Push for Database Review

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members in the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) have sounded the alarm over growing instances of Aadhaar misuse, including fraudulent enrollment by ineligible individuals such as illegal immigrants and identity thieves. During a high-level PAC meeting held on Thursday, lawmakers highlighted cases where fake or duplicate Aadhaar cards were allegedly being used to wrongfully claim government benefits, register as voters, and even facilitate financial fraud.

The discussions prompted immediate action, with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) being directed to conduct a thorough review of its database. The agency has been asked to tighten verification protocols, weed out duplicate or suspicious Aadhaar numbers, and work closely with investigative authorities to crack down on fraudulent activities. A senior BJP member emphasized that safeguarding Aadhaar’s integrity is crucial for both national security and the proper delivery of welfare schemes.

While the UIDAI has reiterated that Aadhaar remains a robust and secure system, the PAC’s intervention reflects mounting concerns over potential loopholes. The Home Ministry may also step in to examine whether Aadhaar misuse is linked to broader issues like illegal immigration. Opposition members, while acknowledging the concerns, urged a measured approach to avoid unnecessary disruption for legitimate users.

The debate has sparked a wider conversation about data security and identity fraud, with some citizens calling for stricter Aadhaar regulations and others cautioning against excessive bureaucratic hurdles. The UIDAI is expected to submit its findings and corrective measures to the PAC within the next six weeks, with possible policy changes on the horizon.

This development comes at a time when the government is increasingly relying on Aadhaar for everything from tax filings to social welfare distribution, making the system’s reliability a pressing issue.
