Tensions Rise in Murshidabad as Waqf Law Protests Spark Alleged Attacks on Hindu Properties

Amid ongoing protests against recent amendments to the Waqf property laws, tensions flared in Murshidabad as reports emerged of Hindu-owned properties being allegedly targeted by Muslim groups. The situation has left residents anxious, with calls for peace and stricter law enforcement to prevent further escalation.  What Happened? Protests erupted across several parts of Murshidabad after the central government introduced changes to the Waqf Board regulations, which some Muslim groups claim unfairly affect their religious properties. While most demonstrations remained peaceful, sporadic incidents of violence were reported in certain areas, including Beldanga and Dhulian.  

Local sources allege that shops and homes belonging to the Hindu community were vandalized, with some businesses forced to shut down temporarily. A grocery store owner, who wished to remain anonymous, claimed, "A mob came shouting slogans and broke my shop’s shutters. I had to flee for safety."  Authorities Respond District officials have deployed additional police forces to sensitive areas to maintain order.

Superintendent of Police (Murshidabad) Rajesh Kumar stated, "We are closely monitoring the situation. Strict action will be taken against anyone found inciting violence, regardless of community."  Meanwhile, community leaders from both sides have appealed for calm. Maulana Abdul Karim, a local cleric, urged protesters to "express grievances peacefully without harming others." Similarly, Hindu community representatives emphasized dialogue over confrontation.  Political Reactions The issue has drawn political attention, with opposition parties accusing the state government of failing to prevent the clashes. 

BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar demanded "immediate compensation for affected families and stronger security measures." The ruling Trinamool Congress, however, blamed "outside provocateurs" for inflaming tensions.  Residents Seek Normalcy As the dust settles, residents hope for a swift return to normalcy. Many fear that prolonged unrest could deepen divisions in the historically diverse district. "We have lived together for generations; a few troublemakers shouldn’t ruin our harmony," said Rina Das, a schoolteacher in Jangipur.  Authorities are investigating the incidents, and peace meetings between community leaders are being organized to ease tensions.
