Clashes Erupt in Murshidabad During Protest Over Waqf Act; Police Vehicle Set Ablaze, Internet Suspended

Violent clashes erupted in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district today as protesters demonstrating against recent amendments to the Waqf Act clashed with police, resulting in arson, stone-pelting, and the suspension of internet services. The unrest began when a large group of demonstrators gathered in Behrampore, opposing the central government’s changes to the Waqf Act, which governs Islamic charitable endowments. Protesters claim the amendments weaken the authority of Waqf boards and are demanding a reversal of the decision.

The situation quickly spiraled out of control as some agitators turned violent, setting a police vehicle on fire and hurling stones at security personnel. Police responded with tear gas and baton charges to disperse the crowd. Several injuries were reported on both sides, though exact numbers remain unclear.

In response to the escalating violence, authorities imposed Section 144 of the CrPC, banning large gatherings, and suspended mobile internet services in parts of Murshidabad to curb the spread of misinformation and prevent further unrest. A senior police official stated, “The situation is being closely monitored, and necessary steps are being taken to restore order.”

The clashes have drawn sharp political reactions, with opposition leaders criticizing the state government for its handling of the protest, while ruling party representatives called for calm and dialogue. Local residents expressed frustration over the disruption, with one shopkeeper saying, “We understand the need to protest, but violence only makes things worse for ordinary people.”

Police have launched an investigation, filing cases against unidentified individuals for arson and unlawful assembly. Authorities are examining CCTV footage to identify those responsible for the violence. As tensions remain high, officials are working to prevent further escalation.
