Tensions Flare in J&K Assembly as AAP MLA Allegedly Attacked by BJP Members Over Religious Remarks

Chaos erupted in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly today after Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) legislator Sheikh Abdul Rehman was allegedly assaulted by members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) during a heated debate over comments concerning Hinduism. The incident, which unfolded in front of stunned lawmakers, has triggered widespread condemnation from opposition parties, who are demanding immediate action against those responsible.

Eyewitnesses say the clash began when an opposition MLA made remarks that BJP members perceived as disrespectful toward Hindu beliefs. While the exact wording remains disputed, BJP legislators reportedly took strong offense, leading to shouting matches across the floor. As tensions rose, AAP MLA Sheikh Abdul Rehman stepped in, calling for calm and urging respectful discussion. However, BJP members allegedly turned their anger toward him, with some physically confronting him near the Speaker’s podium before security personnel intervened.

AAP leaders have denounced the incident as an "unprovoked attack" and accused the BJP of undermining democratic norms. Mohit Bhardwaj, AAP’s chief spokesperson in J&K, stated, "Our MLA was only advocating for peace, yet he was violently targeted. This is unacceptable in a legislative body." Opposition parties, including the Congress and National Conference, have also condemned the violence, with NC leader Tanvir Sadiq emphasizing the need for accountability.

BJP legislators, however, defended their actions, claiming they were reacting to what they called "deliberate insults" against Hinduism. Senior BJP MLA Ravinder Raina said, "We respect all faiths, but we will not tolerate disrespect toward our religion. Our response was to the provocation, not the individual."

The Speaker has announced an inquiry into the incident, but concerns remain over whether this clash will deepen political divisions in the sensitive region. Civil society groups have appealed for restraint, while legal experts suggest assault charges could be pursued if evidence confirms physical violence.

As the debate spills onto social media, with #JKAssemblyViolence trending, the incident has reignited discussions on freedom of speech, religious sensitivities, and the need for decorum in legislative proceedings. With tensions still simmering, all eyes are on whether this confrontation will escalate further or prompt a renewed push for dialogue.
