Opposition MPs Slam Government’s Silence on Impending US Tariffs, Demand Urgent Action

Opposition parliamentarians launched a scathing attack on the Central government today for its conspicuous silence over the United States' plans to impose higher tariffs on Indian exports, accusing the administration of failing to safeguard the country's economic interests. With the US preparing to levy increased duties on key Indian products including steel, aluminum, and select agricultural goods in the coming weeks, lawmakers expressed alarm over the potential damage to domestic industries already facing global trade headwinds.

During a heated Lok Sabha session, Congress leader Manish Tewari questioned the government's inaction, demanding to know why no official response or mitigation strategy had been announced. "These tariffs will cripple thousands of small and medium enterprises across the country," Tewari said. "Yet the government continues to maintain an inexplicable silence. Is this another case of waiting for disaster to strike before reacting?" His sentiments were echoed by Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra, who pointed to a pattern of inadequate response to trade challenges affecting Indian exporters.

The criticism comes amid growing anxiety from industry leaders, with the Federation of Indian Export Organisations warning that the new tariffs could slash India's export earnings significantly if not addressed promptly. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal offered little reassurance when pressed for details, stating only that discussions were ongoing and that India would protect its trade interests—a vague response that opposition leaders derided as evidence of policy paralysis.

The potential fallout extends across critical sectors, with steel and aluminum exports facing potential duty hikes of 10-25%, while agricultural products like rice, spices, and seafood could lose their competitive edge in the US market. Small and medium enterprises, already struggling with pandemic-related disruptions, fear widespread job losses if export volumes decline sharply.

A coalition of opposition MPs has called for immediate government intervention, demanding a detailed assessment of the tariff impact, aggressive diplomatic efforts to renegotiate terms, and financial support measures for affected industries. As pressure mounts, the government's continued silence has left businesses and workers increasingly nervous, with many questioning whether New Delhi has a strategy to counter what could become a major economic challenge in the coming months.
