Tripura Government Extends ₹24.46 Crore Support to Flood-Affected Farmers for Agricultural Recovery
In a bid to help farmers recover from recent devastating floods, the Tripura government has facilitated the purchase of essential agricultural materials worth ₹24.46 crore for affected cultivators. State Agriculture Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced the initiative on Wednesday, emphasizing its role in rehabilitating farmers after heavy monsoon rains in May submerged vast tracts of farmland across West Tripura, Sepahijala, and Gomati districts.
The financial assistance allows farmers to procure seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, and farming equipment to restart cultivation. For small-scale farmers like 45-year-old Dipak Debbarma from Bishalgarh, whose entire paddy field was underwater for days, the support has been crucial. "This help came at the right time. I've already bought fresh seeds and fertilizers to replant," he said. However, some farmers have called for additional long-term measures, including improved drainage systems and stronger crop insurance policies.
Beyond immediate relief, the government has initiated training programs on flood-resistant farming techniques and is exploring collaborations with agricultural scientists to introduce more resilient crop varieties. Authorities are also assessing damage to irrigation infrastructure to ensure timely repairs before the next planting cycle.
While the ruling dispensation has received praise for its swift response, opposition leaders have stressed the need for transparency in fund distribution. CPI(M) leader Jitendra Chaudhury emphasized, "We must ensure every rupee reaches the intended beneficiaries without intermediaries."
With the kharif season underway, agricultural officials remain optimistic. Agriculture Department Director Uttam Kumar Das stated that they are closely monitoring the situation and stand ready to provide additional support if required. As Tripura's farming community works to rebuild, this comprehensive assistance package represents a critical step toward restoring rural livelihoods and ensuring food security in the state.
