Three Terrorists Killed in Overnight Encounter in Shopian

In a decisive overnight operation, security forces eliminated three terrorists during an encounter in Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian district, preventing potential threats to civilian lives in the volatile region. The gunfight erupted late last night when a joint team of the Indian Army, Jammu & Kashmir Police, and CRPF launched a cordon-and-search operation in Kanigam village based on specific intelligence about militant activity.

According to officials, the terrorists opened fire on approaching security personnel, triggering an intense exchange that lasted several hours. All three militants were neutralized in the operation, with authorities recovering weapons, ammunition, and other incriminating materials from the site. "The terrorists chose to engage rather than surrender, leaving us no choice but to retaliate in self-defense," a senior police officer stated.

While formal identification is pending, preliminary reports indicate the slain militants were affiliated with the banned Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) outfit. Security sources suggest one may have been a local recruit while the other two were likely foreign nationals. Forensic teams are working to confirm their identities and nationalities.

The operation concluded without any civilian or security force casualties, with locals commending the precision that prevented collateral damage. "The forces showed remarkable restraint and professionalism," remarked a village elder from the area. This encounter marks the latest success in the ongoing counter-terrorism campaign across the Kashmir Valley, with security agencies intensifying operations ahead of the festive season.

Defense officials reiterated their commitment to rooting out terrorism while civil society groups emphasized the need for complementary de-radicalization efforts. The bodies have been sent for identification and legal procedures as search operations continue in the area to ensure no remaining threats persist.
